Mastering the Van Wijk Knot

I’ve been asked if I can demonstrate how to tie the Van Wijk tie knot, also known as the John Wick tie knot, in 60 seconds. The answer is yes, of course, I can. This knot has three distinctive layers and sometimes features a dimple, depending on your preference. While it has been around for years, it has recently regained popularity. Let’s dive straight in and learn how to master this stylish knot.

The Basics of the Van Wijk Knot

There are two key secrets to successfully tying the Van Wijk knot (or John Wick knot), and I will share both with you. First, start with the tie in the correct position, with the front facing forward and a short rear blade.

  1. Position the Tie: Begin with the wide end of the tie over the narrow end.
  2. Hold the Middle: Use your two fingers to hold the middle section of the tie.
  3. Wrap the Wide End: Wrap the wide end three times around the front.

Van Wijk Knot Step-by-Step Instructions

First Wrap

  1. Cross the wide end underneath the narrow end.
  2. Bring the wide end over the front once.
  3. Cross the wide end underneath again.

Second Wrap

  1. Bring the wide end over the front a second time.
  2. Cross the wide end underneath again.

Third Wrap

  1. Bring the wide end over the front a third time.
  2. Still holding the middle section with your fingers, push the wide end up through the back of the neck loop and then through the layers created by your fingers.

Finishing the Knot

  1. Feed the Wide End: Feed the wide end through your two fingers and pinch it securely.
  2. Pull Through: Hold onto the knot with one hand and pull the wide end through with the other.
  3. Adjust the Knot: Hold onto the rear blade and the knot, then slide it up to your collar to tighten.

Final Adjustments

Once the knot is in place, you’ll see the three layers begin to separate. This is the distinctive feature of the Van Wijk knot.

  1. Fold Down the Collar: Only when you fold down the collar will you see how the knot looks in proportion to the rest of the collar.
  2. Tidy Up: Adjust and tidy up the knot to ensure it looks neat and symmetrical.

Conclusion

And there you have it— the Van Wijk or John Wick tie knot in just 60 seconds. This stylish knot is not only easy to tie but also adds a touch of sophistication to your look. Whether you’re heading to a formal event or simply want to stand out, this knot is sure to make an impression.

Additional Tips and Tricks

  1. Practice Makes Perfect: While the Van Wijk knot can be tied in 60 seconds, it might take a few tries to get it just right. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t look perfect on your first attempt.
  2. Choosing the Right Tie: This knot works best with ties that are not too thick. A medium-thickness tie will help create clean and defined layers.
  3. Maintaining the Knot: Throughout the day, you may need to adjust the knot to keep it looking sharp. A quick tug on the rear blade can help tighten and reshape the knot if needed.

The Van Wijk or John Wick Knot: Perfect for Any Occasion

This knot is versatile enough to be worn at various events, from weddings to business meetings. Its unique appearance can complement a wide range of shirt collars and suit styles. The Van Wijk or John Wick knot is not just a functional way to tie your tie; it’s a statement of style and confidence.

Your Turn to Try

Now that you know how to tie the Van Wijk or John Wick tie knot, give it a try. Experiment with different ties and shirts to see how it enhances your overall look. Share your experience and any tips you discover along the way.
